My Review

“Strange Cargo” is a melodrama film where Clark Gable plays an escaped prisoner from a penal colony who gets into all sorts of trouble with others of the criminal element, including cafe singer Joan Crawford. Director Frank Borzage (“A Farewell to Arms” 1932) does an excellent job of directing traffic and installing good production values into this exciting film. Not a dull moment in the nearly two hour running time, from an excellent screenplay by Lawrence Hazard and Lesser Samuels.

This is the eighth and final on-screen pairing of Gable and Crawford. Great chemistry between the two superstars. It was also Gable’s first film after the big blockbuster “Gone With the Wind.” The supporting cast includes Peter Lorre, Ian Hunter, Paul Lukas, Albert Dekker, Eduardo Ciannelli, and Paul Fix as Benet. “Strange Cargo” was a big box office hit for producer Joseph L. Mankiewicz and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

The films featuring Joan Crawford and Clark Gable are “Laughing Sinners” (1931), “Possessed” (1931), “Dance, Fools, Dance” (1931), “Dancing Lady” (1933), “Chained” (1934), “Forsaking All Others” (1934″), “Love on the Run” (1936), and “Strange Cargo” (1940).
