“Christmas in July” is a classic screwball comedy about an office worker who thinks he has won $25,000 dollars in a national slogan contest for a coffee company, due to a fake telegram placed on his desk by co-workers. To everyone’s surprise, the company owner also falls for the prank and awards the cash prize to him. The zany comedy proceeds from there, well-orchestrated by director Preston Sturges (“The Lady Eve” 1941), who also co-wrote the screenplay.
Dick Powell heads the cast, and is perfect in this role. He was one of the great comedic talents of the 1930’s and 1940’s. Co-stars include Ellen Drew, William Demarest, Raymond Walburn, Alexander Carr, Ernest Truex, Victor Potel, Al Bridge, and Fred Toones. “Christmas in July” had modest success at the box office for Paramount Pictures.
