My Review

The Great Depression era has been vividly depicted in the drama film “The Grapes of Wrath.” The story follows the trials and tribulations of the Joad family from the eviction from their Oklahoma farm to their journey west and eventual arrival in California, “the land of milk and honey.” John Ford (“The Informer” 1935) was focused in his direction of this film, from Nunnally Johnson’s screenplay, adapted from the 1939 novel by John Steinbeck.

The stars of the show are Henry Fonda as Tom Joad and Jane Darwell as Ma Joad. Their performances are central to the success of this motion picture classic, which many consider to be one of the best movies of all time. The supporting cast includes John Carradine, O. Z. Whitehead, Darryl Hickman, Eddie Quinlan, John Qualen, Russell Simpson, Dorris Bowden, Charley Grapewin, Grant Mitchell, Shirley Mills, and Ward Bond in a cameo role as a Barstow policeman.

The watchable movie classic “The Grapes of Wrath” was popular in theatrical release for producers Darryl F. Zanuck and Nunnally Johnson and 20th Century Fox. It was nominated for seven Academy Awards, winning two: Best Director (Ford) and Best Supporting Actress (Darwell). Loses were for top picture, actor (Fonda), screenplay, film editing, sound.
