My Review

Frank Sinatra’s personality-driven Rat Pack motion picture “Ocean’s 11” is a nostalgic view of a show business era that has long since disappeared from sight. Despite loose direction by Lewis Milestone (“Of Mice and Men” 1939) and a mediocre script by Harry Brown and Charles Lederer, the film is actually quite engrossing and entertaining, largely due to the fame and charisma of the cast.

The story has Danny Ocean’s group of friends planning to rob five Las Vegas casinos on New Year’s Eve. Sinatra heads the cast as Ocean, along with co-stars Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford, Joey Bishop, Angie Dickinson, Cesar Romero, Richard Conte, Henry Silva, Norman Fell, Buddy Lester, Akim Tamiroff, Richard Benedict, Ilka Chase, Lew Gallo, Jean Willes, and cameos by Shirley MacLaine, George Raft, and Red Skelton.

Nelson Riddle handled the musical score, with songs from Sinatra, Martin, Davis, and others. The Las Vegas portion of the movie was filmed at the Desert Inn, Sands, Flamingo, Sahara, and Riviera hotels. The watchable “Ocean’s 11” was successful at the box office for producer Lewis Milestone, Dorchester Productions, and Warner Bros. Pictures. Several remakes have been released over the years, such as “Ocean’s Eleven” (2001), “Ocean’s Twelve” (2004), “Ocean’s Thirteen” (2007), and “Ocean’s 8” (2018). Another remake, hitherto untitled, is in pre-production, from producer-director Jay Roach, slated to star Margot Robbie.
