My Review

“Divorce Italian Style” is an Italian black comedy about a wealthy man in Sicily who wants out of his marriage to his homely wife so he can wed a younger and more attractive woman. Director-screenwriter Pietro Germi put together this hilarious look at marriage in Italy, or more specifically, in Sicilian culture.

Marcello Mastroianni does a masterful job in the lead role. His co-stars include Daniela Rocca, Stefania Sandrelli, Leopoldo Trieste, Odoardo Spadaro, Lando Buzzanca, Pietro Tordi, and Antonio Acqua as the priest. The film is in the Italian language, so get ready for English subtitles. The watchable and entertaining “Divorce Italian Style” was successful at the international box office, and won one Academy Award for Best Screenplay. Three years later, Mastroianni starred in an unofficial sequel “Marriage Italian Style” with Sophia Loren.
