My Review

“Breakthrough” is an engrossing faith-based motion picture based on the true story of a teenager who falls into a coma and his family’s efforts to heal him through faith and prayer. Director Roxann Dawson did quite well here in her big screen debut, with the watchable film displaying good production values and a storyline with consistent pacing throughout. (Dawson gained fame as B’Elanna Torres on the television program “Star Trek: Voyager” 1995-2001.) The screenplay was well written by Grant Nieporte, adapted from the 2017 autobiography “The Impossible” by Joyce Smith and Ginger Kolbaba.

The cast includes Marcel Ruiz as the 14-year-old whose health was in question, Chrissy Metz and Josh Lucas as his parents, Topher Grace as their church pastor, Dennis Haysbert as the doctor, and cameo appearances by Christian music stars Phil Wickham and Lacrae and basketball luminary Stephen Curry, as well as Mike Colter and Sam Trammell.

“Breakthrough” is really a Christian thriller, holding the audience’s attention from beginning to end for 116 minutes. It debuted at number three at the box office on the weekend of April 19-21, 2019, ultimately bringing in $50 million against a budget of $14 million. “Breakthrough” was the first 20th Century Fox picture released after that studio’s purchase by The Walt Disney Company.
