My Review

Renee Zellweger delivered a memorable performance as legendary entertainer Judy Garland in the biopic “Judy.” She was so convincing in the role that it was easy to forget that this was indeed Zellweger acting and not Garland herself. Rene Zellweger was awarded the Best Actress Oscar for her efforts.

Director Rupert Goold (“True Story” 2015) gave Zellweger the space she needed to transform herself into one of the most familiar stars of all time. The outstanding screenplay was written by Tom Edge, adapted from Peter Quilter’s stage play “End of the Rainbow.” (The timeline in the film, as in the play, was the last year of Garland’s life.)

The supporting cast includes Jessie Buckley as Garland’s assistant, Finn Wittrock as Mickey Deans, Rufus Sewell as Sid Luft, Richard Cordery as Louis B. Mayer, Gus Barry as Mickey Rooney, Michael Gambon as producer Bernard Delfont, Bella Ramsey as Lorna Luft, and Gemma-Leah Devereux as Liza Minnelli.

Another treat in this picture were twelve of Garland’s songs performed by Zellweger. There seems to be no end of Renee’s talents. “Judy” is very watchable entertainment from 20th Century Fox.
