My Review

Director Sam Mendes (“Skyfall” 2012) put a lot of attention to detail in the World War I drama “1917,” which he also produced and co-wrote with Krysty Wilson-Cairns. It is the story of two British soldiers deployed to deliver an important message to another battalion that an attack scheduled for the next day has been canceled.

The film received critical acclaim and was successful in theatrical release. It did have outstanding production values but was slow moving in certain segments of the movie. The cast includes strong performances from George McKay and Dean-Charles Chapman as the two principals, with Mark Strong, Andrew Scott, Richard Madden, Colin Firth, Benedict Cumberpatch, among others.

“1917” was nominated for ten Oscars, including Best Picture, winning three: Cinematography, Sound Mixing, Visual Effects. Kudos to DreamWorks Pictures, Reliance Entertainment, Neal Street Productions, and Universal Pictures.
