My Review

“To Kill a Mockingbird” is a courtroom drama about the trial of a black man accused of raping a white woman in a small town in Alabama in the 1930’s. The film has a subplot of the coming-of-age story of the children of the attorney, played by Gregory Peck, who won the Academy Award for Best Actor. (Two other Oscars for the film were for the screenplay and art direction.) Director Robert Mulligan (“The Rat Race” 1960) crafted an excellent motion picture from screenplay penned by Horton Foote. The story was adapted from the 1960 novel of the same name by Harper Lee.

The supporting cast includes Paul Fix, Brock Peters, Mary Badham, Ruth White, Phillip Alford, Frank Overton, James Anderson, Collin Wilcox, Alice Ghostly, William Windom, Crahan Denton, Richard Hale, Robert Duvall (in his movie debut), and Kim Stanley as the narrator. “To Kill a Mockingbird” was successful in theatrical release for producer Alan J. Pakula, Brentwood Productions, and Universal Pictures. Elmer Bernstein composed the excellent musical score.
