My Review

Janet Gaynor and Fredric March are featured in the classic tale of a young actress aided by an aging actor on her way to become a big star in “A Star Is Born.” This production sill stands the test of time, which many agree is a superior product to the remakes by show biz heavyweights stretching over generations: Judy Garland (1954), Barbra Streisand (1976), and Lady Gaga (2018).

Director William A. Wellman (“The President Vanishes” 1934) ran a tight ship, aiding in penning the script with Robert Carson, Dorothy Parker, Alan Campbell. Co-stars include Adolphe Menjou, May Robson, Andy Devine, Lionel Stander, J. C. Nugent, Owen Moore, and Peggy Woods. “A Star Is Born” was popular in theatrical release for producer David O. Selznick, Selznick International Pictures, and United Artists.

The film was nominated for eight Academy Awards, winning two: Best Original Story (Wellman and Carson) and Academy Honorary Award (W. Howard Greene for the cinematography). Filmed in Technicolor, “A Star Is Born” was the first color motion picture to be nominated for Best Picture. Other nods included Best Director, Best Actor (March), Best Actress (Gaynor), Best Adaptation, and Best Assistant Director (Eric Stacey).
