“Donovan’s Reef” is a comedy-adventure film where three friends (John Wayne, Lee Marvin, Jack Warden) team up to help Warden’s character deal with his daughter, who is coming for a visit from Boston and hoping to seize control of his shares in a company of which she is CEO. The movie’s remote location on an island in French Polynesia adds to the adventure of the film, as does the expert direction of John Ford, who is in his final collaboration with John Wayne. “Donovan’s Reef” is their 14th film together since “Stagecoach” in 1939.
The excellent supporting cast includes Elizabeth Allen as Warden’s daughter, Dorothy Lamour as Marvin’s girl friend, Cesar Romero as the French governor, Mike Mazurki as the local police chief, Edgar Buchanan as Allen’s Boston attorney, as well as Dick Foran, Marcel Dalio, Jacqueline Malouf, Cherylene Lee, Jeffrey Byron, Jon Fong, and Patrick Wayne (John Wayne’s son) in a minor uncredited role.
“Donovan’s Reef” was beautifully filmed in Technicolor on the island of Kauai in Hawaii. The film was a success in theatrical release for producer John Ford, John Ford Productions, and Paramount Pictures.
