My Review

“Hud” is a fascinating psychological drama and character study set in the form of a modern-day western. Paul Newman plays Hud Bannon, a self-centered man who is continually at odds with his principled father (Melvyn Douglas), owner of a large cattle ranch in the panhandle of Texas. Brandon de Wilde plays Hud’s orphaned nephew and Patricia Neal is cast in the role of Alma the housekeeper.

These four primary cast members all deliver sharp and riveting performances. Patricia Neal and Melvyn Douglas won Oscars for their efforts (Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor, respectively). James Wong Howe was awarded “Hud’s” third Academy Award for the outstanding black and white cinematography. The location shoot in Texas added to the pensive atmosphere of the film.

The supporting cast includes Whit Bissell, Val Avery, George Petrie, Yvette Vickers, Curt Conway, Crahan Denton, and John Ashley. Elmer Bernstein was in charge of the musical score for “Hud,” a success at the box office for Salem-Dover Productions and Paramount Pictures.
