Walt Disney bounced back from his successful 1961 hit “The Absent-Minded Professor” with a sequel called “Son of Flubber.” Director Robert Stevenson (“The Absent-Minded Professor” 1961) made sure this film had a good pace and was consistent with the original, though not as novel and inventive.
The storyline by screenwriters Bill Walsh and Don DaGradi has Professor Ned Brainard’s discovery of Flubber mired in government red tape. The Defense Department has declared Flubber top secret and the IRS has slapped him with a large tax bill. “Remember you’re in Washington. Stop trying to be reasonable about money,” stated one of the cast to the frustrated Prof.
Much of the original cast has returned for “Flubber,” including Fred MacMurray as Prof. Brainard, as well as Nancy Olson, Keenan Wynn, Ed Wynn, Tommy Kirk, Edward Andrews. They are joined by Paul Lynde, William Demarest, Leon Ames, Ken Murray, Alan Hewitt, Jack Albertson, Ginny Tyler, Elliot Reid, and Joanna Moore, mother of Oscar-winner Tatum O’Neal. Joe Flynn appeared in an uncredited role as a television announcer, and Wally Boag and Beverly Wills were cast by Disney in small parts as father and mother in a television commercial.
“Son of Flubber” was successful in theatrical release for producer Walt Disney, Walt Disney Productions, and Buena Vista Distribution.
