My Review

“The V. I. P. ‘s” is a drama film set in London’s Heathrow Airport where heavy fog delays airplane departures. The film depicts the problems created by the delay’s effect on various passengers’ lives. Director Anthony Asquith (“The Millionairess” 1960) put together a well-acted story, but the film was bogged down at times by the extremely wordy dialogue, from the screenplay by Terence Rattigan, making some scenes seem to last longer that they actually are.

The cast is headed by real-life newlyweds Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. They play a couple whose marriage is on the rocks. She was leaving with boyfriend Louis Jourdan when the fog gave Burton more time to work on her. The box office success of “The V. I. P. ‘s” was helped by the enormous publicity surrounding the couple’s previous movie, “Cleopatra,” which was still in general release.

Co-stars include Orson Welles as a film producer, Elsa Martinelli as his protegee, Rod Taylor as an Australian businessman, Maggie Smith as his secretary, David Frost as a reporter, and more! Margaret Rutherford won the movie’s only Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. She played the Duchess of Brighton whose historic palatial mansion is about to be seized by creditors. She is saved at the last minute by the generosity of one of her fellow passengers.

Who is it? Find out this very important fact about a very important person by viewing Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s “The V. I. P.’s” on DVD or maybe streaming somewhere.
