My Review

“The Ugly American” is a political drama film about American involvement in a civil war of a fictional southeast Asian country called Sarkhan, an obvious stand-in for Vietnam. Director George Englund created a thoughtful film that critiqued U. S. foreign policy and put American meddling in the affairs of other countries in a bad light, from a decent screenplay by Stewart Stern, adapted from the 1958 novel of the same name by William Lederer.

The star of the show is Marlon Brando playing the U. S. Ambassador to Sarkhan. His performance is sluggish, not putting much energy or enthusiasm into the role. Co-stars include Pat Hingle, Sandra Church, Arthur Hill, Jocelyn Brando (older sister of Marlon Brando), Eiji Okada, Judson Pratt, Philip Ober, Reiko Sato, and Kukrit Pramoj as the Prime Minister of Sarkhan. “The Ugly America” was not a hit at the box office for producer George England and Universal-International.
