Lucille Ball plays a young woman who is flunking classes at a secretarial school, so she is surprised when a real estate agent hires her to work at his business. She does not realize that it is a front for a bookmaking operation that takes bets on horse races in “Miss Grant Takes Richmond.” Ball has top billing with William Holden in this amusing comedy, well directed by Lloyd Bacon (“Knute Rockne, All American” 1940).
Six years later, Holden would guest star on her hit television show, CBS’s “I Love Lucy” (1951-1957), in one of its most famous episodes where Lucy’s fake nose would catch fire when Holden lights her cigarette. It aired in February, 1955. Co-stars in this film include Janis Carter, James Gleason, Gloria Henry, Frank McHugh, George Cleveland, and Stephen Dunne.
Veteran character actor Charles Lane made an uncredited appearance as Lucy’s secretarial school instructor. Lane would later make numerous appearances on several of Lucille Ball’s programs: “I Love Lucy,” “”The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour,” and “The Lucy Show.” The very watchable “Miss Grant Takes Richmond” was a hit at the box office and with critics for Columbia Pictures.
