My Review

“Dodsworth” is a melodrama movie about how a wealthy businessman and his wife go on a cruise and discover they are not really happy with their marriage. Despite director William Wyler (“Glamour” 1934) putting together his usual glossy motion picture with good production values, this one is an empty story about shallow people from a vapid screenplay by Sidney Howard.

The cast is headed by Walter Huston and Ruth Chatterton as the couple in question. There is no problem in the performance department, with a talented supporting cast including Mary Astor, David Niven, Spring Byington, John Payne, Paul Lukas, Gregory Gaye, Odette Myrtil, Maria Ouspenskaya, Harlan Briggs, and Kathryn Marlowe as Emily. “Dodsworth” was moderately successful in theatrical release for producer Samuel Goldwyn, Samuel Goldwyn Productions, and United Artists. It won a single Academy Award for Best Art Direction.
