My Review

In the second spy film in the 007 series, “From Russia With Love,” James Bond continues to have trouble with SPECTRE, this time on land, on the sea, and in the air. Director Terence Young (“Dr. No” 1962) and the people at Eon Productions continue to refine and add new features to the fledgling movie series.

Sean Connery returns with his polished manner, backed up by a marvelous cast. His co-workers at MI6 include Bernard Lee as M and Lois Maxwell as Miss Moneypenny. Desmond Llewelyn joins the recurring cast as Major Boothroyd, Quartermaster of Research and Development. He would be simply known as Q in the future Bond movies, supplying James with gadgets to help him accomplish his mission. Co-stars include Pedro Armendanz, Lotte Lenya, Robert Shaw, Daniela Bianchi, Walter Gotell, Eunice Gayson, Francis de Wolff, and George Pastell.

This is the first Bond picture with John Barry as the primary soundtrack composer. The theme song was performed by Matt Munro and composed by Lionel Bart. “From Russia With Love” was a big hit at the box office for producers Harry Saltzman and Albert R. Broccoli, Eon Productions, and United Artists. A first for Bond films is the line “James Bond will return” at the end of the credits. We hope this will always be so.
