My Review

The Marx Brothers run amuck in the world of opera as they help two Italian opera singers achieve success in America in “A Night at the Opera.” Director Sam Wood (“Goodbye, Mr. Chips” 1939) guided Groucho, Chico, and Harpo Marx to success in this wacky comedy that served as a good vehicle for their talents. It was their first film at MGM after leaving Paramount Pictures, and their first after Zeppo Marx left the act.

The supporting cast includes Kitty Carlisle and Allan Jones in a significant romantic subplot, with musical duets. Baby boomers will primarily remember Carlisle as a game show panelist from the 1950’s to through the 1970’s. Other co-stars include Margaret Dumont, Sig Ruman, Walter Woolf King, Robert Emmet O’Connor, Edward Keene, and Purnell Pratt as the Mayor. “A Night at the Opera” was successful at the box office for producer Irving Thalberg and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
