My Review

The theatrical talents and vivacious personality of Sophia Loren are on full display in the raucous Italian dark comedy film “Marriage Italian Style.” The story of a businessman who has an on-and-off relationship with a prostitute for some twenty years and then discovers that one of her three sons is likely his is absolutely spellbinding and has the audience in stiches.

Director Vittorio De Sica is responsible for this masterpiece, having previously directed Loren in “Two Women” (1961) and “Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow” (1963). Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni have marvelous chemistry in this picture. “Marriage Italian Style” is an unofficial sequel to director Pietro Germi’s “Divorce Italian Style” (1961) that featured Mastroianni.

The supporting cast includes Gianni Ridolfi, Generoso Cortini, and Vito Moricone as the three sons, as well as Aldo Puglisi, Tecia Scarano, Marilu Tolo, Rita Piccione, and Enza Maggi as Lucia the maid. “Marriage Italian Style” was produced by Carlo Ponti (Loren’s hubby), and was nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Foreign Language Film and Best Actress (Sophia Loren). It is well worth struggling with English subtitles to see this movie.
