My Review

“Roustabout” is one of the higher quality Elvis Presley films of the 1960’s. Director John Rich (“Wives and Lovers” 1963) and writers Anthony Lawrence and Allan Weiss have the King of Rock and Roll taking a job in the circus. The results are very entertaining.

Co-stars include big names like Barbara Stanwyck, Leif Erickson, Jack Albertson, Steve Brodie, Joan Freeman, Sue Ann Langdon, Joel Fluellen, and Lynn Borden. Uncredited cameos by future stars include Billy Barty, Richard Kiel, Terri Garr, Kent McCord, and Raquel Welch as a college girl.

The twelve musical numbers by Elvis are the real star of the show, including “It’s a Wonderful World” and “There’s a Brand New Day on the Horizon.” The soundtrack soared to number one on the Billboard charts. “Roustabout” was a big hit at the box office for producer Hal B. Wallis, Hal Wallis Productions, and Paramount Pictures.
