George Peppard gave a very energetic performance as a Howard Hughes-type of businessman in “The Carpetbaggers.” Director Edward Dmytryk (“Raintree County” 1957) held a tight rein on the movie’s production, making the two-and-a-half hour running time go by very fast. Peppard’s character’s ruthlessness held the audience’s attention, that’s for sure. It was quite successful at the box office for Paramount Pictures.
Co-stars include Bob Cummings, Martha Hyer, Elizabeth Ashley, Lew Ayres, Martin Balsam, Leif Erikson, Archie Moore, Carroll Baker, Ralph Taeger, Arthur Franz, and John Conte. Superstar Alan Ladd made his final big screen appearance as Nevada Smith, a cowboy movie star and Peppard’s close friend. (Ladd’s first film was made in 1932.) A prequel starring Steve McQueen as Nevada Smith came out two years later called “Nevada Smith.”
