My Review

“Ride the Wild Surf” is a romantic drama film set in the beach party culture of the 1960’s. However, there is no comedy in this drama of three friends who travel to Oahu’s North Shore for surfing action and subsequent romantic drama. Director Don Taylor (“Everything’s Ducky” 1961) put together a superior surfing film with high-quality production values and good acting. Producers-writers Art Napoleon (the original director) and Jo Napoleon captured outstanding surf footage on the North Shore with cinematographer Joseph F. Biroc.

The cast includes familiar faces of the era such as Fabian Forte, Shelley Fabares, Tab Hunter, Barbara Eden, Susan Hart, Peter Brown, James Mitchum (son of Robert Mitchum), John Anthony Hayes, Roger Davis, Murray Rose, and Catherine McLeod. The title song was performed by Jan & Dean, written by Jan Berry, Brian Wilson, and Roger Christian. It became a big hit on the music charts. The watchable movie “Ride the Wild Surf” did have some box office success for Columbia Pictures.
