My Review

Elvis Presley plays two roles in the musical comedy “Kissin’ Cousins.” His first part is that of a U. S. Air Force officer sent to the Smokey Mountains to help establish a military base. After he arrives, he is surprised to meet his look-alike third cousin, a blonde hillbilly type. The comedy and music proceed from there, under the expert guidance of director Gene Nelson (“Hand of Death” 1962), who also co-wrote the screenplay with Gerald Drayson Adams; Nelson was also in charge of music.

Co-stars in “Kissin’ Cousins” includes Jack Albertson, Arthur O’Connell, Glenda Farrell, Yvonne Craig, Pamela Austin, Cynthia Pepper, Donald Woods, Beverly Powers, Hortense Petra, Robert Stone, and Tommy Farrell. Appearing in uncredited cameos are Teri Garr, Kent McCord, and Maureen Reagan, daughter of Ronald Reagan and Jane Wyman. Filming took place in the San Bernardino Mountains east of Los Angeles, especially in Big Bear Lake.

As expected, the watchable Elvis Presley vehicle “Kissin’ Cousins” was a big hit at the box office for Four-Leaf Productions and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It was Presley’s first film after “Viva Las Vegas” and his last film before the arrival of the Beatles and the “British Invasion.”
