Burt Reynolds plays an aging movie star invited to a local film festival in Nashville, Tennessee, where he is to receive a lifetime achievement award in “The Last Movie Star.” After he arrives, he goes on a journey through his past in his nearby hometown of Knoxville. Producer-director-screenwriter Adam Rifkin (“Giuseppe Makes a Movie” 2014) skillfully put together an engrossing sentimental story with quality character development and relatable performances by the cast.
Burt Reynolds fits the bill perfectly in the title role. He himself is a veteran film actor, and Rifkin even used scenes from two of his movies where the older Reynolds talks to his younger self (“Deliverance” 1972 and “Smokey and the Bandit” 1977). This was one of Reynolds’ last films, as he passed away in September, 2018, six months after its general release in March, 2018. “The Last Movie Star” was first viewed at the Tribeca Film Festival in April, 2017, in New York City.
The supporting cast includes some talented actors including Ariel Winter as his driver and companion in Nashville, Clark Duke and Ellar Colltrane as the film festival organizers, Chevy Chase as his friend in Hollywood, and Kathleen Nolan as his former love interest. Others include Nikki Blonsky, Al-Jaleel Knox, Juston Street, Shelley Waggener, Todd Vitum, Cody Longo, Jena Sims, Kennedy Summers, and Amy Hoerler as Nurse Amy.
The watchable “The Last Movie Star” was initially viewed at film festivals, on video, DVD, and streaming services, and in a very limited release in theaters. “The Last Movie Star” was a production of Whitener Entertainment Group, Mandt Bros. Productions, and A24 Films.
