My Review

Director Otto Preminger (“The Man with the Golden Arm” 1955) put together a rivetting psychological thriller movie called “Bunny Lake Is Missing.” It is the story of a young woman who arrives at preschool to collect her daughter only to find that the child is missing and the staff claims to have never seen her. There is a big investigation by police who find nothing and begin to question the woman’s sanity.

The outstanding screenplay by John Mortimer and Penelope Mortimer was adapted from the 1957 novel of the same name by Merriam Modell. This is great material for the actors to work with, especially Carol Lynley in the starring role, one of the best of her career. Laurence Olivier is, as usual, brilliant playing the police superintendent investigating the case. Keir Dullea steals the show to some extent, as Lynley’s brother, three years before his break-out performance as Dr. David Bowman in “2001: A Space Odyssey” (1968).

Other cast members include Martita Hunt, Anna Massey, Clive Revill (voice of the Emperor in “The Empire Strikes Back” 1980), Finlay Currie, Lucie Mannheim, Noel Coward, and the rock band The Zombies as themselves. The watchable “Bunny Lake Is Missing” had some success at the box office for producer Otto Preminger, Wheel Productions, and Columbia Pictures. It was filmed in black-and-white wide screen.
