My Review

Frank Sinatra took over the director’s chair for the only time in his career with some good results. “None But the Brave” is a World War II story of a platoon of Japanese soldiers and a platoon of U. S. Marines stranded on the same remote Pacific island, forced to get along while waiting to be rescued by their respective militaries.

The interesting and well-written screenplay by John Twist and Katsuya Susaki was transformed into an evenly paced motion picture by the Chairman of the Board, who co-produced the film with Kikumaru Okuda of Toho Studios. Okuda also originated the story. The antiwar theme in the movie has faded over time, leaving contemporary viewers free to appreciate the 106 minute film on its artistic merit alone.

The cast includes Frank Sinatra, Tatsuya Mihashi, Clint Walker, Tommy Sands, Takeshi Kato, Hisao Dazai, Brad Dexter, Tony Bill, Sammy Jackson, Richard Bakalyan, Rafer Johnson, Jimmy Griffin, Christopher Dark, Don Durrell, Howie Young, Roger Ewing, Phil Crosby (son of Bing Crosby), Richard Sinatra (cousin of Frank Sinatra), and Laraine Stephens in an uncredited role as Clint Walker’s fiance.

The watchable World War II picture “None But the Brave” was modestly successful at the box office for producers Frank Sinatra and Kikumaru Okada, Tokyo Elga, Toho Studios, Artanis Productions, and Warner Bros. Pictures.
