“Minions: The Rise of Gru” is the sequel to “Minions” (2015) and tells the story of Gru as an eleven-year-old planning to become a supervillain with the help of his friends, the Minions. This leads to a showdown with an evil team called the Vicious 6. Director Kyle Balda (“Minions” 2015) keeps up the quality of this latest film in the “Despicable Me” franchise, with help from an outstanding screenplay by Matthew Fogle and Brian Lynch.
The returning voice cast includes Steve Carrell as Gru, Pierre Coffin as the Minions, Julie Andrews as Marlena, Russell Brand as Nefario, Will Arnett as Perkins, and Steve Coogan as Silas. Newcomers are Michelle Yeoh, Alan Arkin, Taraji P. Henson, Lucy Lawless, Dolph Lundgren, Danny Trejo, and Jean-Claude Van Damme.
The watchable “Minions: The Rise of Gru” is more of the same from the mischievous Minions and their boss Gru on the big screen with colorful animation. It was wildly successful in theatrical release for producers Chris Meledandri, Janet Healy, and Chris Renaud, Illumination, and Universal Pictures.
