The spy film craze of the 1960’s includes James Coburn starring as master spy Derek Flint in “Our Man Flint.” He is a former agent of Z. O. W. I. E. (Zonal Organization for World Intelligence and Espionage) brought out of retirement to battle three mad scientists who threaten the world. Director Daniel Mann (“For the Love of Ivy” 1968) did a great job at the helm of the picture, with a passable screenplay by Hal Fimberg and Ben Starr.
The supporting cast behind James Coburn includes Lee J. Cobb, Edward Mulhare, Gila Golan, Benson Fong, Sigrid Valdis, Shelby Grant, Rhys Williams, Michael St. Clair, William Walker, Peter Brocco, and Russ Conway as an American general. Uncredited actors include Dick Williams as overseer of the Pleasure Unit process (later gaining fame as Mr. Whipple of the Charmin television commercials) and Van Williams providing the voice of President Lyndon Johnson over the telephone with Derek.
“Our Man Flint” was very successful at the box office for 20th Century Fox. A sequel called “In Like Flint” was released the next year also starring Mr. Coburn.
