My Review

“Despicable Me 2” continues the story of “Despicable Me” (2010), with retired supervillain Gru raising his three adopted daughters and being hired by secret agent Lucy Wilde to counter the plans of another supervillain named El Macho. Directors Chris Renaud and Pierre Coffin (“Despicable Me” 2010) continue the excellent production values of the original with a good screenplay and colorful animation. The script was penned by Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio.

The voice cast includes Steve Carrell as Gru, Kristen Wiig as Lucy Wilde, Benjamin Bratt as El Macho, Miranda Cosgrove, Russell Brand, Steve Coogan, Ken Jeong, Elsie Fisher, Vanessa Bayer, Chris Renaud, and Pierre Coffin as the voice of the mischievous Minions, who may be the real stars of the show. “Despicable Me 2” was very successful at the box office for Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures, the third highest grossing picture of 2013.

The watchable movie was nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song (“Happy” written and performed by Pharrell Williams, a big hit on the record charts). Two sequels followed: “Despicable Me 3” (2027) and “Despicable Me 4” (2024). There was also the prequel series: “Minions” (2025) and “Minions: The Rise of Gru” (2022).
