My Review

“Despicable Me” is an animated comedy movie about a supervillain named Gru who adopts three orphan girls to use in a nefarious scheme to make money but suddenly develops an emotional attachment to them. Prominent characters of the film are the Minions, small pill-shaped creatures serving Gru. Directors Chris Renaud and Pierre Coffin, in their motion picture debuts, have created a film that is now a major film franchise with three sequels (2013, 2017, 2024) and two prequels called “Minions” (2015) and “Minions: The Rise of Gru” (2022).

The voice cast includes Steve Carrell as Gru, Julie Andrews as Gru’s mother, Pierre Coffin as the Minions, as well as Jason Segel, Russell Brand, Kristen Wiig, Will Arnett, Miranda Cosgrove, Chris Renaud, Dana Gaier, Elsie Fisher, and Ken Jeong. Producer Chris Meledandri, founder of Illumination Entertainment, also the man behind the “Ice Age” movie franchise, has a winner on his hands with this very entertaining series of films. “Despicable Me” was a huge hit at the box office for Illumination Entertainment, The SPA Studios, and Universal Pictures.
