“The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly” is the story of three men in 1862 in the American Southwest during the Civil War, all searching for a cache of Confederate gold. This very entertaining film is the third in a series of “spaghetti westerns” from Italian director Sergio Leone featuring Clint Eastwood; they made him an international superstar. The first two were “A Fist Full of Dollars” (1964) and “For a Few Dollars More” (1965).
Leone gave the film the same characteristics as the first two: Minimal dialogue, wide-angle shots coupled with close-ups, and a haunting musical score composed by Ennio Morricone. Clint Eastwood was joined in the lead parts by Lee Van Cleef and Eli Wallach, all perfect for these quirky roles. The supporting cast was made up of Italian and Spanish actors, who all spoke in their native languages, later dubbed into English. All of these unconventional movie-making techniques only add to the film’s charm and appeal.
