My Review

The Best Picture of 1966 is…..”A Man for All Seasons.” This historic drama, set in the early 1500’s, tells the story of Thomas More, the Church official who resisted King Henry VIII’s attempts to secure an officially sanctioned divorce from Catherine of Aragon. Paul Scofield delivered a powerful performance as More, under the excellent guidance of director Fred Zinnemann (“Oklahoma!” 1955), with an outstanding screenplay penned by Robert Bolt. It was based on Bolt’s own 1960 play of the same name.

Co-stars include Wendy Hiller, Susannah York, Corin Redgrave, Leo McKern, John Hurt, Robert Shaw, Vanessa Redgrave, Nigel Davenport, and Orson Welles as Cardinal Wolsey. “A Man for All Seasons” was a big hit at the box office for producer Fred Zinnemann, Highland Films, and Columbia Pictures. It won a total of six Oscars: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Scofield), Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, and Best Costume Design.
