My Review

John Wayne stars in the wildly entertaining western heist movie “The War Wagon,” where he plays a man seeking compensation for being wrongfully imprisoned three years before. Director Burt Kennedy (“Mail Order Bride” 1964) put in all of the great production values that make The Duke look good, including a fantastic screenplay by Clair Huffaker (adapted from his own 1958 novel “Badman”) and an exceptional musical score from Dimitri Tiomkin, which includes a toe-tapping theme song by Ed Ames.

The talented supporting cast includes Kirk Douglas, Howard Keel, Robert Walker Jr., Keenan Wynn, Bruce Cabot, Joanna Barnes, Valora Noland, Bruce Dern, Gene Evans, Terry Wilson, and Hal Needham. The very watchable film “The War Wagon” was a huge hit at the box office, to the delight of Batjac Productions and Universal Pictures.
