“Flipped” follows the story of two children, a boy and a girl, from the second grade into their teenage years. The girl falls in love with him from the first time they meet, but as they grow older, he develops feelings for her and she is not so crazy about him. Director Rob Reiner (“The Princess Bride” 1987) has put together this film that has a very realistic portrayal of teenagers, chronicled over the years of their acquaintance, from an outstanding screenplay that he co-wrote with Andrew Scheinman.
Madeline Carroll and Callan McAuliffe are outstanding in the lead roles. They lend their acting chops to the in-depth character development provided for them by Rob Reiner. The outstanding supporting cast includes Rebecca De Mornay, Anthony Edwards, John Mahoney, Penelope Ann Miller, Aiden Quinn, Kevin Weisman, Shane Harper, Cody Horn, Stefanie Scott, and Israel Broussard. This was John Mahoney’s final film appearance.
The very watchable “Flipped” was not a success at the box office for producer Rob Reiner, Castle Rock Entertainment, and Warner Bros. Pictures. However, it is popular on streaming and with the home-video crowd. The film was adapted from the 2001 young adult novel by Wendelin Van Draanen.
