My Review

“Auntie Mame” is the story of an orphan boy who must live with his flamboyant and libertine aunt when his father passes away. Things seem to be fine until Mame Dennis is ruined financially with the stock market crash of 1929, and she must take a variety of jobs to make ends meet, with the dramatic and comedic storyline proceeding from there. Rosalind Russel carries the film with her talent and unique show-biz persona, well-directed by Morton DaCosta from a screenplay by Betty Comden and Adolph Green.

Child actor Jan Handzlik was outstanding as Mame’s nephew Patrick Dennis. He eventually left show business and went on to a successful career as a trial lawyer. The stellar supporting cast includes Forrest Tucker, Fred Clark, Roger Smith, Peggy Cass, Joanna Barnes, Coral Brown, Patrick Knowles, Lee Patrick, Pippa Scott, Connie Gilchrist, Robin Hughes, Willard Waterman, Yuki Shimoda, Brook Byron, and Henry Brandon.

“Auntie Mame” was a box office success for producer Morton DaCosta and Warner Bros. Pictures. It was nominated for six Academy Awards, winning none. It was based on the 1956 play and the 1955 novel of the same name by Patrick Dennis. A musical version appeared on Broadway in 1966, and made into a 1974 film, “Mame,” starring Lucille Ball.
