“Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” has become a familiar catchphrase in the English language thanks to producer-director Stanley Kramer (“It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World” 1963) and screenwriter William Rose. The film explores the topic of interracial marriage, from every possible angle, in this love story of a black man and a white woman who must announce their engagement to their parents.
The couple in question were sensitively portrayed by Sidney Poitier and Katherine Houghton. Poitier was the first African-American leading man in motion pictures, and this part was made to order for him. There is fantastic chemistry between Poitier and Houghton on the big screen. (She also happens to be the niece of star Kate Hepburn.)
Veteran movie stars Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn made their ninth and final film together here in “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” as the parents of Houghton. It was also Tracy’s last movie role; he passed away about two weeks after the filming was completed.
Other cast members include Roy E. Glenn and Beah Richards as Poitier’s parents, as well as Cecil Kellaway, Barbara Randolph, Virginia Christine, and Isabel Sanford, who later went on to her most famous role of Louise Jefferson on “All in the Family” (1971-1975) and “The Jeffersons” (1975-1985). The very watchable “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” was filmed in Technicolor and a huge hit at the box office for Columbia Pictures.
