My Review

Producer Aaron Rosenberg and director Gordon Douglas (“Stagecoach” 1966) put together some fun entertainment with “Tony Rome.” This Frank Sinatra vehicle features the Chairman of the Board playing a private detective in the mold of the noir police dramas of the 1940’s.

Richard L. Breen wrote a captivating and absorbing screenplay adapted from Marvin H. Albert’s 1960 novel “Miami Mayhem,” which provided Sinatra with some custom-made quippy one-liners like “Thanks for the ride” to the elevator operator.

Frank’s supporting cast included some class acts like Jill St. John, Sue Lyon, Gena Rowlands, Simon Oakland, Richard Conte, Lloyd Bochner, Jeanne Cooper, Shecky Greene, Jeffrey Lyon, Robert J. Wilkie, and retired boxer Rocky Graziano in a rare film appearance. The popularity of the watchable “Tony Rome” prompted 20th Century Fox to order a sequel, to be called “Lady in Cement” to be released the very next year.
