My Review
“How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” is a musical comedy-drama about a young man who attempts to rise from the mail room to head of a corporation following advise he reads in a self-help book. Director-screenwriter David Swift (“Pollyanna” 1960) did a meticulous job of recreating the popular 1961 Broadway play, with words and music by Frank Loesser. It was in turn based on the 1952 book of the same name by Shepherd Mead. Nelson Riddle was in charge of the movie’s musical arrangements.
The star is the talented Robert Morse as J. Pierrepont Finch, the ambitious young guy of the show. He really carried the picture with his enthusiastic and energetic performance. Co-stars include veteran Rudy Vallee, toward the end of a long career that began in the 1920’s, and Michelle Lee, at the beginning of her show business venture. She would go on to fame and fortune as one of the stars of the CBS nighttime drama “Knots Landing” (1979-1993).
Others include Anthony Teague, Maureen Arthur, John Myhers, Janice Carroll, Robert Q. Lewis, Hy Averback, George Fenneman as himself, and Anne Seymour and Robert Osborne in uncredited roles. The watchable bouncy musical “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” was not successful at the box office much to the chagrin of producer David Swift, The Mirisch Corporation, and United Artists.
