“Madigan” is a crime drama starring Richard Widmark as a NYPD detective who, along with his partner, loose their firearms to a thug while being distracted by his nude girlfriend in his apartment. They are in big trouble with the police commissioner. Director Don Siegel (“The Killers” 1964) tightly directed this thriller from a well-written screenplay by Howard Rodman and Abraham Polonsky, adapted from the 1962 novel “The Commissioner” by Richard Dougherty.
Richard Widmark was outstanding in the title role in this gritty urban drama. The supporting cast is incomparable, with Henry Fonda as the NYPD Commissioner, Inger Stevens as his wife, Harry Guardino as his partner, as well as James Whitmore, Susan Clark, Michael Dunn, Don Stroud, Steve Ihnat, Sheree North, Raymond St. Jacques, Bert Freed, Warren Stevens, Virginia Gregg, Lloyd Haines, and Conrad Bain as a hotel clerk. Don Costa handled the musical score.
“Madigan” was a modest success at the box office for Universal Pictures. Richard Widmark reprised the Madigan character for six episodes of the “NBC Wednesday Mystery Movie” in 1972.
