My Review

“Don’t Raise the Bridge, Lower the River” is a comedy film about a man whose get-rich-quick schemes alienate his wife, who finally decides to leave him. Director Jerry Paris put together a ridiculous, confusing, and moronic comedy from a very bad screenplay written by Max Wilk, adapted from his own novel of the same name published in 1961.

Jerry Lewis, the star of the show, gabs and garbles his way though this monstrosity. He really looks terrible on screen, along with co-stars Terry-Thomas, Jacqueline Pearce, Bernard Cribbins, and Patricia Routledge, an all British supporting cast who seem to be keeping a stiff upper lip to get through the film. Ditto for the movie’s viewers, who stayed away from this box flop. “Don’t Raise the Bridge, Lower the River” was an unfortunate project from Walter Shenson Productions and Columbia Pictures.
