My Review

Doris Day’s final appearance in a feature film was the romantic comedy “With Six You Get Eggroll.” This wholesome family comedy featured a talented cast including Brian Keith as Day’s love interest, Barbara Hershey as his daughter, and John Findlater, Richard Steele, Jimmy Bracken playing her three sons. The blended family theme was popular at the time, with Lucille Ball’s “Yours, Mine, and Ours” out in theaters the same year, and “The Brady Bunch” debuting on television in 1969.

The supporting cast included Pat Carroll, Herb Voland, George Carlin, Alice Ghostley, Elaine Devry, Vic Tayback, Jackie Joseph, William Christopher, Allan Melvin, Jamie Farr, and the rock group The Grass Roots. Director Howard Morris (“Who’s Minding the Mint?” 1967) and producer Martin Melcher (Day’s husband) put together an entertaining independent film with good production values. “With Six You Get Eggroll” was a big hit at the box office, allowing Doris Day’s film career to end on a positive note. Her first movie appearance was in 1948’s “Romance on the High Seas” from Warner Bros. Pictures.
