My Review

“Marlowe” is a neo-noir movie starring James Garner as Los Angeles private detective Philip Marlowe, who has been hired by a young woman from Kansas to find her missing brother. This movie never really takes off due to unfocused direction by Paul Bogart and a mediocre screenplay by Stirling Silliphant. Garner delivers his usual charming performance, something of a forecast of his future television series “The Rockford Files” on NBC from 1974-1980.

Garner and his very talented cast help to make “Marlowe” at least minimally acceptable escapist entertainment. This includes Gayle Hunnicut, Carroll O’Connor, Rita Moreno, Sharon Farrell, William Daniels, Jackie Coogan, Kenneth Tobey, Bruce Lee, H. M. Wynant, Jason Wingreen, Corinne Camacho, Paul Steven, Anna Lee Carroll, and Read Morgan. The slow-moving “Marlowe” was not successful for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

Liam Neeson took another stab at “Marlowe” in 2022, and also experience another all-star flop at the box office.
