“True Grit” is a western movie that tells the story of U. S. Marshall Reuben J. “Rooster” Cogburn who is hired by a fourteen-year-old girl to search for the murderer of her father. They are soon joined by a Texas ranger, also seeking to bring the man to justice for another killing. The threesome waste no time in engaging in squabbles about how to go about searching for the killer.
The cast is headed by the legendary John Wayne, who won the only Academy Award of his career for Best Actor for this part. He did carry the picture, as he usually does, but especially in this one as co-stars Kim Darby and Glen Campbell delivered weak performances. Campbell did well at singing the film’s theme song, “True Grit,” music by Elmer Bernstein and lyrics by Don Black, nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song.
The supporting cast includes Jeff Corey, Robert Duvall, Dennis Hopper, Strother Martin, Ethel Atwater, John Doucette, H. W. Gim, Carlos Rivas, John Fielder, Ron Soble, Elizabeth Harrower, Ken Renard, and Hank Worden. Jay Silverheels and Wilford Brimley appeared in uncredited cameos. The fun and watchable “True Grit” was popular at the box office for producer Hal B. Wallis and Paramount Pictures.
John Wayne appeared in a sequel “Rooster Cogburn” in 1975 with Katherine Hepburn. Another sequel, “True Grit: A Further Adventure” came out as a made-for-television movie starring Warren Oates. In 2010, a remake “True Grit” was released featuring Jeff Bridges, Hailee Steinfeld, and Matt Damon.
