My Review

“Anne of the Thousand Days” is a fascinating look at the marriage of King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, with Richard Burton and Genevieve Bujold delivering outstanding performances in the leading roles. The pair have fantastic on-screen charisma, with this being Bujold’s first performance in an English-speaking movie.

Burton, Bujold, and co-stars Irene Papas, Anthony Quayle, John Colicos, Michael Hordern, Katharine Blake, et al., benefited from the well penned screenplay by Bridget Boland, John Hale, and Richard Sokolove, adapted from the 1948 play by Maxwell Anderson. Director Charles Jarrott (“Time to Remember” 1962) is responsible for this high quality costume drama period piece, filmed on location in England, and not necessarily historically accurate in all points. It won a single Academy Award (out of ten nominations) for Best Costume Design.

A couple of cameo appearances to look for: Elizabeth Taylor (wife of Burton) about an hour into the picture, and the movie debut of Kate Burton (daughter of Burton) as a serving maid. “Anne of the Thousand Days” was successful at the box office for producer Hal B. Wallis, Hal Wallis Productions, The Rank Organisation, and Universal Pictures.
