My Review

Clint Eastwood starts his popular depictions of the tough guy hero, after getting famous starring in spaghetti westerns, in “Coogan’s Bluff,” where he plays an Arizona deputy sheriff in New York City to extradite a criminal. This is the first of five collaborations with director Don Seigel, which included “Dirty Harry” in 1971. Seigel and screenwriters Herman Miller, Dean Riesner, and Howard Rodman created an engrossing 94 minute film, whose big crime is gratuitous violence.

The fine supporting cast includes veteran character actor Lee J. Cobb, Susan Clark, Tisha Sterling, Don Stroud, Betty Field, David Doyle, Marjorie Bennett, Seymour Cassel, and Conrad Bains, ten years before his breakthrough role of Phillip Drummond on television’s “Diff’rent Strokes” (1978-1986). Lalo Schifrin composed the musical score for the watchable “Coogan’s Bluff,” a success in theatrical release for Universal Pictures. TV’s “McCloud” starring Dennis Weaver is based on this project.
