My Review

The Best Picture of 1969 is…..”Midnight Cowboy.” This is a drama about the unlikely friendship between a con man and a male prostitute on the streets of New York City. Director John Schlesinger (“Far From the Madding Crowd” 1967) put together a movie that has good performances from the actors but a screenplay and subject matter that is voyeuristic in nature. The movie is basically a lowlife peep show. This was the first film rated X to win the Best Picture Oscar. It was later changed to R after reissue in 1971, and since 1996 would get an NC-17 designation (no one 17 and under admitted).

Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight play the lead roles, with co-stars Sylvia Miles, John McGiver, Brenda Vaccaro, John Hughes, Bob Balaban, Ruth White, and Anthony Holland. “Midnight Cowboy” was successful in theatrical release for Jerome Hellman Productions, Mist Entertainment, and United Artists. It won three Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay (Waldo Scott). It was based on the 1965 novel of the same name by James Leo Herlihy.
