Amidst all of the counter-culture movies of the 1960’s and 1970’s, Hollywood released an old-fashioned romantic drama that was a big box office hit. “Love Story” is the tale of a young couple whose idyllic marriage is interrupted by a terminal illness.
Adept direction by Arthur Hiller (“The Americanization of Emily” 1964) and proficient writing by Erich Segal (based on his 1970 novel) lead to a smooth and evenly-paced one hundred and one minute motion picture. The cast is headed by Ryan O’Neal and Ali MacGraw, seemingly sent over from central casting as Oliver and Jenny. Co-stars include Ray Milland, John Marley, Russell Nype, Katharine Balfour, Sydney Walker, Robert Modica, Walter Daniels, and Tommy Lee Jones in his motion picture debut.
“Love Story” won a single Oscar (out of seven nominations) for Best Original Score (Francis Lai). “Where Do I Begin?” is the very recognizable theme, a big hit on music charts for Andy Williams. A good story, lots of cash income, and “love means never having to say you’re sorry” was a big hit at the box office for Love Story Company and Paramount Pictures.
