“Two Mules for Sister Sara” is a western drama about a professional gunfighter who team up with a Catholic nun to help in the Mexican rebellion against French rule. This slow-moving two-hour film was sloppily directed by Don Siegel (“Invasion of the Body Snatchers” 1956) from a mediocre screenplay penned by Albert Maltz.
Besides the bad production values, the producers miscast the two principal actors. Clint Eastwood and Shirley MacLaine delivered subpar performances, and demonstrated terrible chemistry on the big screen. This film just does not work on any level. “Two Mules for Sister Sara” barely broke even at the box office for Malpaso Productions, Sanen Productions, and Universal Pictures.
