Jack Nicholson plays an irascible oil rig worker returning to his hometown after several years absence, with his girl friend in tow, when he learns that his father is dying. The drama proceeds from there, including the surprising revelation that he was a child prodigy pianist from an affluent background.
Director Bob Rafelson (“The King of Marvin Gardens” 1972), who co-wrote the screenplay with Adrien Joyce, put together an engrossing film that has good character development. Nicholson delivers a good performance, as does Karen Black as his main squeeze. Both were nominated for Oscars, out of a total of four, including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay.
“Five Easy Pieces” is not always a watchable film, due to the surly nature of Nicholson’s character. It is what it is. “Five Easy Pieces” was successful at the box office for producer Bob Rafelson, BBS Productions, and Columbia Pictures.
